The Tip

I don't know about you, but I used models a lot more in 6.0 than 5.2. So, when it came time to upgrade, I had not used File>Convert Model very much. When I got my shiny new Authorware 6.5, I immediately missed my custom icons and other models. Imagine my dismay when I realized that File>Convert Model only lets you select one file at a time. I could maybe write a Command to do it, but some days that's just too much like thought.

I quickly realized, though, that I could create an Authorware 6.0 file and drag all my models into it. Then, I could open the file in 6.5, letting Authorware convert the icons of all the erstwhile models at once. At that point, all that's left is to drag them back into the model palettes that point to the 6.5 folders.

Did you know?

If you're wondering where the updates to the Help are for 6.5, they are in the Help folder within the 6.5 Program folder. The new information is in a document called "Authorware 6.5 What's New," in a folder called "Addendum."

If you never noticed the "Addendum" folder before, it was there even in 6.0. It contains all kinds of good stuff, such as a list of the default images available for a TreeView control, a printable table of Keyboard Shortcuts, and printable references for System Functions and Variables. I was highly incensed to get my 6.0 manual without the handy functions and variables references at the back. Wish I'd noticed this folder sooner!

Next Chat: Tuesday, December 3

The next scheduled chat will be Tuesday, December 3 at 6:30 PM Central US Time. The topic will be: Connecting Your Authorware piece to a Database. I am still in the process of scheduling guests. Use the time zone converter to calculate the time where you are.

I've noticed an increasing number of questions about connecting your Authorware project to a database, either local to the user or over the internet. I am planning to have a number of experts, so come with all your questions in hand.

Authorware on Designer and Developer Center

Authorware has a tendency to be left out of the spotlight at Macromedia, but thanks to some talented writers, we do have a couple of articles on the Designer and Developer Center site.
