The Tip

Did you ever want to protect your code so that no one can wreck critical functionality? Or maybe you just don't want to share how you did something. Or you want to look like a God, with code that works by PFM (pure f*ing magic, if you don't speak geek).

Well, you could lock your code into a locked KO, but that's a pain. Plus, it does not remotely resemble PFM. A nifty trick is to use SetCalc() to attach code to the implied map that contains your entire Authorware piece, RootIcon. For example, if you used:
SetCalc(RootIcon, "foo := "some text"")
the variable foo would mysteriously be set to "some text" whenever the piece is run.

I believe as User Defined functions become more widely used, developers may begin using this technique to protect sensitive scripts from prying eyes.

Did you know?

Your Authorware CD is a great resource. I consult the "Show Me's" frequently for a quick refresher or a helpful pointer in the right direction. Today I opened the Flash ActiveX show me for the first time, and found it to be very helpful when I got stuck. Another one I use pretty often is the XtraIO Show me for the FileIO Xtra.

Another thing you should check out on your CD is the "Goodies" folder. This has a lot of free resources that you might find handy. Did you know that Cover.u32 is in this folder? Other oldies but goodies include DispText.u32 that lets you draw text on the screen at runtime without embedding it in a Display, and DispDib.u32, which lets you do the same thing with bitmaps.

Each release of Authorware has a whole new crop of Goodies, so check out the bots, u32's, ActiveX controls, and whatever else might be lurking on your CD.

Website News

My Website was announced just over 6 months ago, and I've been amazed by how far it has grown. The site has had over 7,000 hits, and there have been 10 chats. I've done 21 Tip of the Week Newsletters, and the newsletter has more than seventy subscribers! I was surprised and gratified to find that Macromedia has a link to my site. Thanks, everyone, for being there to share this with me!

Blog

I found something my cats like better than catnip. And it's free. I live in the middle of what was once a hayfield, so the "grass" in my yard is really hay that has been repurposed. When I "forget" to weed whack for a while, the tufts of hay can get quite long.

I noticed my cat, Jake, looking longingly out the door at one of these tufts, so I plucked a stalk and presented her with it. She went wild! you'd think I had a 7 week old kitten instead of a 7 year old cat, the way she went racing after it, pouncing on it and sinking claws into it before the wayward stalk could escape.
