The Tip

As an escaped graphic designer, I get totally frustrated that when I copy an object in a Display Icon, when I paste it back in that icon it is offset both horizontally and vertically. This makes it so that Shift-Dragging it to a new location means that it is not aligned with the original.

One way I have found to get around this is to copy the object to the clipboard, then press Control-B on the keyboard to jump directly to that icon on the flow line. Shift-Double-Clicking the icon reopens it. Now, Control-V will paste the object exactly where the original was.

Another helpful hint that Grace Daminato shared on the macromedia.authorware newsgroup is that when you press the Spacebar Authorware will deselect all objects in the Display. I find this especially helpful when I am using one of the drawing tools to draw a new shape close to one I have just drawn.

Conversely, double-clicking the icon on the drawing tools palette will select all objects in the Display.

Did you know?

Authorware 6.5 comes with a pair of new variables ObjectOver and ObjectOverID. They contain the title and IconID of the object that the cursor is over. They were added to make accessibility easier, but you can also use them for cool stuff like making "buttons" out of Display icons, complete with rollover and down states. Check out the April, week 3 Tip for some ideas on how you might do this.

You could also put tool tips for an icon right inside the Display. For instance, embedding {Test(ObjectOverID=IconID, ToolTipText, "")} will display the tool tip text for that icon only when the cursor is over it.

Ha! If you thought this was going to be about me or one of my myriad pets this week, you're wrong. My good friend Steve Howard has started doing the Blog thang every day. Way more dedicated than I am! Check it out!

Make your travel plans now!

Having a career in Authorware is a great way to see the world! Make your plans now to go to EuroTAAC 2003. This year, it will be in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Friedrichshafen is about as centrally located in Europe as you can get--very near Switzerland and France.

Oh, and there will be lots of good speakers there, as well, including yours truly. Right now, my planned topic is creating great graphics for use in Authorware, but I'll keep you posted.

Hot on the heels of EuroTAAC, the MediaShoppe are hosting an E-Learning cruise. I am planning on going on this cruise myself. It has a project-based approach to E-Learning, so the focus is less on Authorware and more how to plan your E-Learning project, create it, and test it.
